WELL OBSERVATION PROGRAM
Observation Well Program

The SWCD has been monitoring groundwater levels, under a contract with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.  Six wells located throughout the county are checked monthly from March through December in order to track groundwater levels. These wells are in critical areas of the county, where large amounts of water are being used, or where future development might cause a groundwater problem.  The overall objective is to collect sufficient baseline data which the state can use to access the impacts on our groundwater.

Location of Wells

The District has six DNR observation wells in Martin County located in Westford, Cedar, Fox Lake, Lake Belt and Pleasant Prairie Townships.  We record the water level by dropping a tape down the well and measuring the distance from the surface to the water.  This helps us monitor the water level of the different aquifers in Martin County.

Purpose

The DNR Observation wells network was set up to record groundwater levels in areas of present and expected groundwater use.  The DNR uses the data collected to assess groundwater resources, interpret impacts of pumping and climate, plan for water conservation, evaluate local complaints and otherwise support resource management programs.

Contact the DNR website at Department of Natural Resouces http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/waters for more information or the Martin SWCD if you are interested in having your well monitored for the program at 507-235-6680.
