MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Martin SWCD is to assist land users of Martin County in efficiently utilizing the soil and water resources in our county.  The District will assist land users in increasing the productive use of crop land pasture land, wood land and wildlife production.

Office Hours:  Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays.
 
Location:  Martin SWCD is located in Fairmont in the Arthur Andrews building that also houses the Farm Service Agency (FSA).  Carissa Spencer, a District Conservationist for Natural Resources Conservation Service is also located in our office.  The Martin SWCD includes a staff of five full-time employees.
 
History:  Soil and Water Conservation Districts were set up by Congress starting in the 1930's all over the country after the Dust Bowl.  Martin SWCD was formed in 1947 to address soil erosion on the county' farm land. Since our origin, we have been providing technical and financial support to Martin County residents for a wide variety of conservation practice in Martin County  which is located in Southern Minnesota.  It is 709.34 square miles and the estimated population in 2004 was 21,044.  The county seat is Fairmont.  Martin County consists of 10 towns and 20 townships.  Martin County has approximately 420,000 tillable acres.  About 1,000 farms averaging about 420 acres per farm.
