Rain gardens can be very simple yet elegant. |
This rain garden is in a new development located in Medina. There are no curbs in this development as all of the rain water is utilized by the rain gardens.
This rain garden has a curb cut with a strip of lawn that is the width of a lawn mower to help collect the sediment that goes into this garden. |
This functioning rain garden collects the rain water before it goes into the storm drains. |
This type of rain garden goes right under the side walk to allow the water to collect and drain. |
Do you have a steep driveway or hill? Look at the beauty and serenity added to your property! |

It’s that time of year again, fall is in the air, folks start putting away their shovels, garden gloves, preparing for winter. Many residents have a desire to have neatly-groomed plants and lawns. Those same lawns require fertilizer, constant watering, and mowing in the spring and summer. This type of gardening contributes significantly to lower water quality in our area lakes and streams. The Martin Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) is suggesting an alternative that will bring beauty and the potential to increase property values -by adding a Rain Garden as a low-cost method of improving water quality while preventing flooding and drainage problems. |
This workshop is being sponsored by CER, City of Fairmont, Martin SWCD, & the U of M Extension. The presenter will be Karen L. Terry, Regional Extension Educator, University of Minnesota Extension. Pre-registration is required for this workshop. To register or receive more information, contact Roni Dauer, CER Director: rdauer@fairmont.k12.mn.us or call 507-235-3141. |
One-on-one consultation time will be available during the seminar so please consider bringing a simple sketch of your property (showing locations of buildings, driveways, downspouts, existing vegetation), photographs of your property, and (if known) what type of soil you have (sand, loam, clay). |
