DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES SHORELAND HABITAT GRANT

FY2009:  Amount Approved:  $25,000

Lakeshore Restoration along Lake Sisseton by Cathy Thiesse (January 2010 Conservation Update, Fairmont Photo Press)

Through a grant from Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for Shoreland Habitat, the Martin SWCD has been able to bring Shoreland Restoration, Educational Workshops (minimum of 4) and hands-on experience to our citizens.

The grant is for $25,000 and went into effect May 1, 2008 and must be completed by June 30, 2010.  The grant focuses on the promotion of shoreland landscaping which includes a shoreland buffer zone on approximately 200 feet of shoreline south of Lake Avenue, Fairmont, Minnesota.  The primary site consists of approximately 2,000 square feet of shoreline which is reed canary grass and other invasive species.  There is shoreland erosion that will be restored by planting native plants.  In this same site is an area of approximately another 40,000 square feet that is overgrown with buckthorn and other invasive species.  SWCD is partnering with the City of Fairmont Park Department in removing it.  Martin SWCD will restore native plants, shrubs, trees, and grasses to this area for a demonstration site.  This primary site offers many learning opportunities and walking paths to show that well managed land contributes significantly to the health and quality of the total lake ecosystem.

A secondary site is approximately 400 feet of shoreline along the west side of the channel between George and Sisseton Lakes in Fairmont, MN.  This site is largely eroded along the shoreline and has been overgrown with buckthorn and other invasives.  Restoration will include restoring a buffer strip 100 feet from the water’s edge with native plants, trees, and shrubs.

The total funding of the project is to cover the proposed projects and educational workshops for materials, supplies and labor.  Martin SWCD is providing an in-kind Match amount of $8,000 and a total match (cash) of $1,000.  If you are interested in helping with the projects as a volunteer please contact our office at 507 235-6680.
