Martin SWCD was honored to nominate Duane Petrowiak for the 2009 MASWCD Outstanding Supervisor.  He has served on our Board for over 21 years of dedicated service.  Duane leads by his great sense of justice, high values, ethics and responsibility to conservation.  Duane serves as a mentor to other Supervisors, staff and members.  He is always well prepared for any committee assignment he receives. 
 
Duane has had the privilege of farming and practicing good stewardship within Martin County over the last 54 years.  Conservation practices that Duane has incorporated are reduced tillage, CREP, CRP and tree planting.  Duane is a private person and doesn't look for acknowledgement for his many works.  He is a leader and stands strong in his beliefs in conservation and the importance it has for future generations. Duane's other contributions include: 

  • Treasurer for the Silver Lake Township for 33 years

  • Worked for Martin County as a Ditch Appraiser

  • East Chain School Board for one term

  • Served on the Martin County Planning Commission 

  • Worked part-time for 28 years for Martin County ASC Office explaining and signing up farmers for the Farm Programs, sketch and measure land and bins. 

 

Duane is active in the Knights of Columbus and shares NACD Stewardship materials and trees with his church family.   He is active in promoting conservation education among our youth.  Duane has been a staunch supporter of the MASWCD Poster/Mural/Video Contest in our county, at the Area and State Levels and continues to work toward re-establishing the program at the State Level. 

 
Duane continues to move forward with technology, new programs and techniques.  He is conscientious of budgets and works hard to raise awareness among all the participants.   Duane is highly respected and embodies that we all can make a difference.
